Tuesday, June 25, 2013

The Camp Sumter military prison at Andersonville was one of the largest Confederate military prisons during the Civil War. During the 14 months the prison existed, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here. Of these, almost 13,000 died. Today, Andersonville National Historic Site is a memorial to all American prisoners of war throughout the nation’s history.

In Late February, 1864, Federal prisoners began to be transferred to the still-unfinished Georgia facility. By July, Andersonville, built to accommodate up to 10,000 captured soldiers, was jammed with over 32,000 men, almost all of them enlisted men. A Hollywood-made movie, depicting this infamous prison will be shown on the motorcoach.

We will be having a filling and nourishing lunch at the Mennonite Restaurant of Yoders which is a rural cafeteria style local restaurant with fabulous home cooking. A narrated tour of Andersonville follows lunch with time to walk the prison grounds and view some of the monuments erected by many states honoring their soldiers. The cemetery is the final resting place for the Union prisoners who died while being held at Camp Sumter/Andersonville as POWS.

Checks for $99 per person are to be made payable to Excursions Unlimited and delivered to the lower mail box of Margie Solaro at 10 Devant LANE or Mary Bernardo, 74 Nightingale Lane, both in Sun City or may be mailed to Lorraine Allen Tours, 88 Garden Row North, Hardeeville, SC 29927.

Time is short so get your checks in early. A minimum of 35 folks is required for this tour.

Since 1623, the town’s rugged coastline and sandy coves have enticed visitors to its shores, and with Boston only 30 miles away, if the nearby whale-watching and nature trail opportunities don’t summon you, 400 years of American history will.

Are you interested in joining me on a wonderful Viking River Cruise? If you have never been on a River Cruise before, plan to be surprised! River boats navigate in smaller bodies of water and bring you right into towns and villages of Paris, Amsterdam, Budapest, Normandy, Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Beijing and so many other exciting destinations. Viking is my favorite river cruise line where most excursions are included and sodas, wine and beer on the ship are complimentary at lunch and dinner. There are times when Viking offers 2 for 1 specials with discounted air fares, Once these specials are offered, full payment is required at the expiration of the 2 for 1 special. If you are interested in getting information on these offers, please e-mail me at La6112@gmail.com and include the destinations you are interested in. As soon as these specials are announced, I will e-mail the information to you, remember payment, plus the insurance (if you choose to purchase it) is required when the special ends.

E-mail me at La6112@gmail.com if you would like more information on these wonderful 2 for 1 specials and the various destinations Viking River Cruises offer.

SEP 23… The first conflict of the American Revolution took place in April of 1775 at Lexington & Concord. We visit this historic site this morning before going into downtown Boston. We tour this most historic city of New England. It was here in Boston that the flames of freedom were fanned as the colonists opposed the taxation from the British and revolted. We will see the location of the “Boston Tea Party”, visit Old North Church of Paul Revere lore, and follow the Freedom Trail. We have a chance to view “Old Ironsides”, the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S Navy, and enjoy dinner at the No Name Cafe. (B,D)

SEP 24 … This morning we travel south into Rhode Island as we enjoy a tour of charming Newport. Our focus is on the palatial summer homes of the rich & famous, the Rockefellers and Astors, and many more barons of America. Our tour will also include a visit to the summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, “The Breakers”, to witness the extreme wealth of one of America’s grand entrepreneurs. We return byway of Providence, first city of the colony, before arriving back at our hotel. (B)
